In a world where cars so often look alike, the characterful DS3 stands out from the crowd – we think the striking lights and floating style roof give it an elegant appeal. As with many modern small cars, personalisation is key, a choice of 30 colours, seven different roof designs, unique dashboards and five different shades of gear lever mean no two DS3s should look the same – but its upmarket feel is let down by some of the interior materials.



Practicality

The DS3 comes with the obvious challenges a twodoor car presents – although the front doors open wide and the seat slides forward to make getting in easier. But once you’re in the back the space is disappointing, and the interior is missing more useful storage compartments. The boot is spacious, however, and even the leastexpensive models in the range come with extras like air conditioning, mirrors painted to match the roof and cruise control, which makes the car stick to a speed set by you.

Driving

Getting behind the wheel around town is a quiet, comfortable experience with light steering and smooth controls that make the DS3 easy to drive. Visibility out of the back window isn’t bad, although parking sensors would be a welcome addition. The DS3 is also noisy at faster speeds and not as much fun to drive as its main rival, the Mini.

Safety

The DS3 scored a full fivestar Euro NCAP crash test rating, and every model comes with electronics that help you stay in control if you skid, Isofix child seat points, six airbags and a system that sends your location to the emergency services if you have an accident.

Running Costs

The range of fuelefficient engines make this an affordable car to run. The diesel engines are the most frugal, Citroën claims they offer up to 79mpg and they’re so green you won’t pay any road tax – but remember that opting for an automatic gearbox will reduce fuel economy.

GH Verdict

The DS3 is a fun, stylish car for the young – and young at heart.
