Working from home during the colder months has its benefits – no daily trudge in the cold and dark to the train station only to find it’s been cancelled or delayed. I love the hybrid setup, but not wanting to blast 23 Celsius out of my radiators all day, my extremities do get a tad chilly.

Don’t worry, I do wear pants while working – I mean my fingers. I got some fingerless gloves for home working to stop my hands from freezing as I type and edit for hours a day, but they were too bulky.

Fine for outdoors but impractical for using a keyboard, so I did some Googling (other search platforms are available – they’re just not as good). A £4.29 pair of much thinner fingerless gloves from Amazon came up as highly rated – 4.4 out of 5 after more than 600 ratings to be precise. The confusingly titled ‘Half Finger Gloves Winter Fingerless Gloves Knit Typing Gloves for Men Women’ on Amazon are available in black and grey for £4.29 – or £3.99 in white and grey which I’m only just realising as I type this. That extra 30p would have come in handy.

Can something that cheap be any good? Well yeah, have you never had a Maccies cheeseburger? So bosh, in the basket and ‘ding dong’, they’re at my door. Here’s the lowdown…

Do they keep my hands warm?

Yes, and no. They take the edge off which is very welcome, but they don’t keep my hands as warm as my thicker pair which give off homeless street drinker vibes. But they were never going to. The compromise I was after was a pair of fingerless gloves that don’t get in the way while working on a computer and make my hands a bit warmer, which they do.

    Are they good value?

Absolutely. For £4.29 they’re an absolute bargain. They do the job well enough. However I haven’t put them through the wash yet because they are very thin and I’m not convinced they’ll survive many cycles. After a few weeks they are already bobbling and if I wore them for manual tasks they’d probably fray pretty quickly, so these are not gloves for outdoor building work or parkour.

They are thin enough to tuck under the sleeves of a jumper or hoody so you barely notice them when they are on, and my hands have their full flexibility for writing razor sharp copy and delivering zingers to colleagues on messaging apps. Just don’t ask them to verify that.

So if, like me, you’re finding the cold grip of winter seeping into your hands while you type, these Amazon gloves are a cheap and cheerful solution.

    Mug warmer for your desk

And if you’re finding your tea and coffee is going cold while working from home, you can also get a mug warmer that heats and keeps your drink at the optimum temperature. The Electric Beverage Warmer with Gravity Sensor is down to £19.31 from £31.99 on Amazon in a limited time deal. It’s got a rating of 4.6 out of five after 103 reviews.

One happy reviewer wrote: “This is the most fantastic wee gadget. I thought it was a bit gimmicky but it keeps my cuppa piping hot.” Another added: “Bought to help keep my drinks hotter while l am working and does the business. Well worth it and will take it away when l am on holiday. Light weight and easy to use.”

However some people struggled with it. One person wrote: “I bought this and the first thing was that there are no instructions whatsoever. As soon as I used it, I realised that it just keeps my coffee tepid. Not hot at all.”

Another claimed it burnt their mugs. The device has different settings for ceramic, metal and glass so it’s important to choose the right one. Alternatively Menkind does a USB powered mug warmer for £12. It’s rated 4.5 out of 5 after four reviews, although all the reviews appear to be centred around the efficiency of the delivery and ease of ordering.
