The Peugeot 2008 is one of the more stylish ‘crossovers’ you can buy, it’s chic, almost feline style is more car like than some of its rugged, tough looking rivals. Inside we like the high quality feel and unique dashboard layout, with highset dials and a small, sporty steering wheel. Everything is controlled from a touchscreen keeping the layout simple and uncluttered which is easy to reach, and once you’ve taken the time to understand it, simple to use.
Practicality
The large boot opens low and is easy to load, while the back seats fold down for extra space and the stepped roof gives plenty of headroom but the storage compartments aren’t particularly well thought out. There’s enough room in the back seat for three adults and we like the fulllength glass roof which adds a light airy feel, and is a well priced extra although it will reduce headroom.
Driving
The higher driving position, good visibility and a comfortable ride that soaks up bumps in the road make this an easy car to drive. We like the smaller steering wheel, which suits a woman’s frame, and gives a good feel for the car. The 2008 only comes in twowheel drive, it may have the look of an offroader, but won’t take you there. But a system called Grip Control sends grip to the tyres that need it most, giving extra confidence in mud, snow or on sand.
Safety
The 2008 scored the full fivestars Euro NCAP crash test rating. It comes with six airbags, electronics to help stop you loose control if you skid, hazard lights that automatically come on when you brake hard and ISOFIX points for child seats. If parking is your nemesis you can opt for a system which uses technology like ultrasound to do the parking for you.
Running costs
The two Diesel engines offer the best economy, Peugeot claim around they will give around 71mpg and road tax is also low.
GH Verdict
The Peugeot 2008 is a brilliant car for families, it’s safe, stylish, spacious and reliable. It gives the popular 4×4 look, at an affordable price with the running costs of a supermini.
