The Prince of Wales Theatre has existed in the heart of Piccadilly Circus since 1884, and was formerly known as The Princes Theatre. In its early years, the theatre proved so popular that it was demolished, to be rebuilt with a larger capacity. The current building opened in 1937 with a brand new Art Deco style, designed by Robert Cromie, whose other projects include the Eventim Apollo and the Royal Court’s mid-century interior refurbishment. The building was granted Grade II listed status in 1999.
In 2004 extensive refurbishment took place to further increase the theatre’s capacity. The auditorium was rebuilt, new bars were added and the stage facilities were modernised. The tower that tops the venue’s roof, which has become a recognisable London sight, was refurbished and fitted with LED lighting for a bright, modern look.
The Prince of Wales Theatre is currently owned by Delfont Mackintosh and houses the Delfont Room, which stages concerts and performances throughout the year. The main stage has traditionally been hosted musical comedies, with past productions including Funny Girl and Sweet Charity.
