Looks
The fiveseat Scenic looks rather bland next to many of its newer rivals and it’s the same story inside. It’s well thought out and built, but it feels unadventurous although you do get good equipment levels, even the basic model comes with air conditioning, cruise control, keyless entry and Bluetooth.
Practicality
It feels spacious and airy with enough room to fit three child seats in the back. There are plenty of the storage compartments a family needs, including a handy once for keeping your handbag in underneath the drivers seat and flip up tables on the back of the seats. The boot is a good size and the back seats slide back and forwards or come out completely if you need extra space.
Driving
The high seating position and large windows mean visibility is good, the steering is light and it holds the road well the children won’t end up dropping their snack, books and tablets every time you go round a corner! The diesel engines give the power you need when the car is loaded up with all the family and their stuff! The XMOD versions will give you extra roadholding, and while you won’t be able to go offroad, it’s useful technology in winter or if you live in the countryside.
Safety
The Scenic scored a full fivestar rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests, safety options include a warning system to alert you if you stray out of your lane along with parking sensors and a rear parking camera.
Running Costs
There are 20 different versions of the Scenic, so running costs can vary. Our advice is to go for one of the diesel engines as they offer a combination of performance and economy the most efficient model is the Dynamique TomTom Energy dCi which Renault claims will give 69mpg and comes with a £20 road tax bill.
GH Verdict
The Scenic does what it needs to do it’s practical and well equipped but it doesn’t stand out from the crowd, and no longer feels like the groundbreaking car it once was.
