On 3rd July 2000, Transport for London was officially formedâmaking us 25 years old this year! đ
Since then, weâve always worked to improve the lives of Londoners through a variety of improvements across our network, always keeping the customer journey at the heart of everything we do.
Hereâs a look back of some of the key milestone improvements weâve made over the past 25 years, with more to come throughout the year âŹïž
Oyster Card Launch đȘȘ
In June 2003 we introduced one of the worldâs most popular transport smartcard â the Oyster card. This revolutionary technology transformed how travel is paid for in London, later enabling customers to âpay as you goâ by topping up their smartcards.
The Oyster card made travel simpler and more convenient by allowing faster boarding on buses, quicker access through ticket gates, and reduced need to queue to buy paper tickets.
Key customer benefits of the Oyster card include:
- Faster entry and exit through stations and on buses
- Secure balance protection in case of loss or theft
- Cost savings with fare caps ensuring the cheapest travel options
The London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics đ„
In 2012, we played a crucial role in helping millions of people attend the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, while also keeping the rest of London moving. The games were the UKâs largest multi-sport even in UKâs history and the most exciting global event a city can host.
During the games, we:
- Increased train frequencies and extended evening services by an hour to help spectators travel efficiently
- Deployed additional staff and volunteers across the network, providing real-time travel advice
- Boosted capacity on 37 bus routes during the Olympics and 22 routes during the Paralympics to meet increased demand
- Enhanced 46 miles of cycling and walking routes in east London, encouraging visitors to experience the unique atmosphere on Londonâs streets
Night Tube Service Launch đ
In August 2016, the Night Tube service was introducedâa significant step forward in modernising the Underground. Designed to support Londonâs leisure and night-time economy, it also provided essential transport for late-night workers and early risers.
Key highlights of the Night Tube:
- Convenience: Late-night journeys became quicker and easier with clear maps showing exactly when and where the service operates
- Usage: In its first 12 months, the Night Tube served 7.8 million passengers
- Economic benefits: The service boosted Londonâs vital night-time economy

Northern line extension đ
In 2021, we celebrated the first major Tube extension of the 21st century, extending the Northern line to Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms. In June 2022, TfL doubled the frequency of trains on the extension, from six to 12 trains per hour during peak times, and from five to 10 trains per hour at off-peak times to help cut journey times.
This extension connected key parts of South London to central London, bringing them within 15 minutes of the West End and the City. Both of the stations provide step-free access to customers which enhanced access for passengers.
