The August bank holiday is always a busy and hectic time in Londonas the city hosts some of its biggest events – from the world-famous Notting Hill Carnival to music festivals like All Points East and RALLY. With hundreds of thousands set to flock to parties and parades, public transport faces its annual test. This year, travel disruption is relatively light, but there are still key closures and changes all Londoners and visitors should note for August 22-25.
Major disruptions: Notting Hill Carnival
West London’s streets will be full and thriving for Notting Hill Carnivaldrawing enormous crowds and putting intense pressure on nearby stations. Several Underground and Overground stations around Notting Hill will operate differently on Sunday and Monday:
Ladbroke Grove
Closed all day.
Latimer Road
May close temporarily for crowd control and will fully shut at 11:30pm.
Notting Hill Gate
Exit only from 11am to 6pm; District and Circle line trains will not stop here.
Westbourne Park
Exit only from 11am.
Holland Park
Exit only from 11am-3pm, then closes at 3pm.
Royal Oak
Exit only from 11am-6pm, then closes at 6pm.
Kensal Green
Expect long queues in the afternoon and evening.
Kensal Rise
Chamberlayne Road entrance closes at 6pm; a queuing system will be in place at Station Terrace afterward.
Top travel tip: The Central Line heading toward Notting Hill will be particularly busy during Carnival days. TfL recommends using the Tube or Elizabeth line to Paddington and then walking, or from east London, taking the Weaver line to Liverpool Street and switching to the Elizabeth line.
Overground
While most London Underground lines are scheduled to run normally, there are a few disruptions on Overground services and other rail lines:
Windrush line
No trains between Sydenham and West Croydon before 8am on Sunday.
Milled line
Late-evening services affected on Friday; several trains won’t run on Bank Holiday Monday, notably early mornings and throughout the day on routes between Willesden Junction, Clapham Junction, Stratford, and Richmond.
Lioness line
Reduced service Saturday to Monday. Trains that typically run to Euston will terminate instead at Kilburn High Road, and some departures from Euston will start at Kilburn High Road.
Suffragette line
The 11:03pm service from Barking Riverside to Gospel Oak on Friday will terminate early at Upper Holloway.
Travelling during the Bank Holiday
Despite these disruptions, the bank holiday travel landscape is smoother than in many previous years. However, the closure and restricted access at critical Carnival stations mean you should:
Plan in advance. Consider alternative routes and allow extra time for journeys.
Expect queues and crowd management at both entry and exit stations close to the Carnival and major events.
Check TfL’s real-time updates before traveling, since unpredictable disruptions (due to crowds or operational needs) can occur.
