It’s bringing Catford Mews back to life
Three-screen cinema Catford Mews, which was opened by the Really Local Group back in 2019, became a popular haunt for South Londoners thanks to its varied programme of films and space for local food traders inside. However, after accruing debts of £387,000, Lewisham Council (which owns the Catford Centre where the cinema was located), evicted Really Local Group from the site in 2024, leaving the space empty.
Now East London’s The Castle Cinema has taken on the site and will be bringing movies back to Catford this year. The Castle Cinema, which opened on Chatsworth Road in 2015 after a crowdfunding campaign, has become one of the best places to catch a film in the whole of London, so there’s no better team to revitalise Catford Mews.
Reopening at The Castle Catford some time in 2026, the venue will boast three screens, a community space, a bar and a cafe. The programming will be varied, with a focus on independent and foreign language films alongside mainstream titles, and the foyer area will be run as a cafe/food court, providing space for food start-ups to trade.
Speaking about the cinema, Asher Charman, co-founder of The Castle Cinema, said: “We know how much this venue means to Catford, and we’re honoured to be part of its next chapter. Our goal is to bring The Castle’s independent heart to 32 Winslade Way, pairing a world-class film programme with a relaxed, welcoming bar and cafe.
“We’re building more than just a cinema; we’re creating a space for culture and connection, for everyone. From Parent & Baby screenings and LGBTQ+ events to curated strands celebrating Black cinema and local heritage, we want our programme to reflect the true diversity and energy of Catford. We’re excited to build a vibrant social hub where the whole community feels at home.’
