A woman was disgusted after making a realisation about the cheese she was served at a pub – especially when she Googled the brand and saw how much it was being sold for

Eating out these days, especially in London, can set you back a small fortune. However, if you’re out and about with friends or family, you’ll likely have budgeted accordingly for the occasion.

That’s why one woman was prepared to fork out a whopping £18.50 for a Camembert, because who can resist a pot of cheesy goodness as their starter as a little treat?

Amy Hilton didn’t name the pub she went to, but she did expose what they’d done when she realised that her cheese tasted a little bit less luxurious than she expected for the almost £20 price point.

Amy pulled out the wrapper to see that the Camembert was the Cricket St Thomas British Camembert Cheese, so she did a quick Google search, only to find that it could be purchased by anybody at Tesco, for just £2.75.

On TikTok, she captioned the video: “Not another daylight robbery. At least cover it up,” as she revealed that the Camembert she’d served had a mark-up of £15.75.

“FYI, I wouldn’t recommend buying this from Tesco either,” she seethed, hinting that the Camembert was less than tasty.

It seems like she’s not the only one who thinks that, either, as some of the reviews on the Tesco website are less than glowing for the product.

“I have eaten many different Camemberts, and this is by a long, long, long way the WORST one I have ever eaten. It has no real flavour other than a vague soap taste, and the texture is slimy – after cooking, you’re left mostly with skin. I would never buy this again. It is ridiculously overpriced considering how disgusting it is,” someone wrote. So imagine how Amy felt paying £18.50.

Another added: “Very bland. Missing the strong taste and smell of other brands of Camembert I’ve bought previously. Disappointing”.

Some did like the cheese, however, saying: “Lovely cheese. Nowhere as pungent as French camembert, which has a tendency to stink the fridge out. For me, it’s just as nice as other camembert cheese, and I will definitely be buying it again (and again)!”

In the comments of Amy’s TikTok, where she couldn’t believe she’d been charged so much for a value cheese, someone wrote: “Even as an accountant, I’m struggling to justify the markup”.

“£18.50 for bread and cheese is criminal,” a second added, but a man replied: “You’re not paying for bread and cheese though. It’s staff wages, energy bills, rent, cleaning etc… if you want bread and cheese for cheap then have it at home”.

A third questioned what Amy wanted, however, penning: “Well, hate to say, did you think the pub was going to make their own?”

Somebody quipped: “Missing the point, the pub should be offering a quality product from a decent supplier – not serving a poor quality Tesco value product and charging gastro pub prices.

“Going to a restaurant, the whole point is them making some sort of effort with the produce and food they sell. Understand the margins are tiny these days, but they can do better”.
